Core Forest Sites:

towards implementing viable Forest Habitat Networks

12th-13th May 2005
New Lanark Mill Hotel, New Lanark World Heritage Site

This conference, to mark the conclusion of the initial phase of the project:
  • celebrated achievements at local, national and international levels
  • was a way to share experience
  • developed and maintained local partnerships and involved public and private organisations, agents, landowners, communities and individuals
  • continued the engagement of the private sector in this and other projects, helping to explore both opportunities and pitfalls.

‘Core Forest Sites: towards implementing viable Forest Habitat Networks’ did all these things. But more importantly, it was a springboard to take forward what has been achieved in Core Forest Sites work and to learn lessons from it. In that way, it provided a timely means to see how Forest Habitat Networks can be achieved and to discuss many different aspects of that work.

A summary of the conference proceedings is available to download as a pdf file.

How was it ?

That’s some of the thinking behind the project. So how was it in reality? More than 60 people gathered in New Lanark Mill Hotel in the surroundings of the New Lanark World Heritage Site to share ideas about Core Sites and Forest Habitat networks. Participants included foresters, scientists, farmers, estate managers and owners, regional councillors heads of national agencies and a deputy minister from the Scottish Executive.

A touch of magic

Visits to local Core woods within the Clyde Valley area gave people the chance to see restoration work at first hand. Meals (given added intrigue by a magician who did the rounds) and evening bar discussions added informal opportunities to make new contacts and develop ideas.

Everything went to schedule and without hitch, thanks in no small measure to the excellent organisation provided by Solas and the skill of those who chaired the different sessions.
