Clyde Valley History

To get a clear idea of how recent work in the Clyde Valley woodlands fits within the long history of long-term woodland development in the area, we commissioned a woodland history report (.pdf).

This was part of a Forest Research project and carried out by Philip Sansum, Mairi Stewart and Fiona Watson of Stirling University’s AHRB Research Centre for Environmental History. It details the findings of an investigation of the woodland history of three of the Clyde Valley woodlands, but also gives an outline of woodland history relevant to the whole of the Clyde valley.

The report includes the findings that:

  • by the 18th Century the semi-natural woodlands of the area were generally managed as coppice with standards.
  • fragmentation of the woods was significant in the 19th Century.
  • the way that managed woods are closely associated with small orchards and alluvial grasslands is likely to be an ancient feature of some of the SAC sites.
  • past history of the woods offers a range of management choices
  • further study could shed more light on the special features of individual woods and on the woods in general.
